Replacing RV interior lights with LEDs is usually less about removing a few screws and more about choosing the right replacement first. Before you order a new light, determine whether your existing fixture uses a replaceable bulb or an integrated LED panel. Then verify the RV circuit, fixture size, mounting area, wiring, controls, brightness, and color temperature. If you are working around wiring, disconnect the appropriate power sources first and follow both your RV manual and the new light manufacturer's instructions. Replace the Bulb or the Whole Fixture? The first decision is simple: do you need a new LED bulb, or a complete RV light fixture? Older dome lights and reading lights may use removable incandescent or halogen bulbs. In that case, you may be able to keep the existing fixture and install a compatible LED replacement bulb. Other RV LED interior lights use LEDs that are integrated into the fixture. If the LED board is not designed to be serviced separately—or if you want a different housing, better diffusion, dimming, or adjustable color temperature—replacing the whole fixture may make more sense. What You Have Now Likely Upgrade Check Before Ordering Removable bulb and a fixture in good condition Compatible LED bulb Bulb base, physical size, voltage, and compatibility Integrated LED panel with no serviceable bulb Complete LED fixture Voltage, footprint, mounting, wiring, and controls Yellowed lens, damaged housing, poor light distribution, or limited controls Complete LED fixture Size, brightness, color temperature, dimming, and diffuser design Do not assume every interior light in every RV is wired the same way. RVs can contain both low-voltage DC systems and 120V AC systems, so the rating on the actual circuit and fixture matters more than what another RV owner used. Check These Five Things Before You Buy a Replacement A light can be labeled for RV use and still be a poor replacement for your particular ceiling, wiring, or control setup. Before buying 12 volt LED lights for an RV interior, check these five points. 1. Confirm the System Voltage and Power Type Start with the old fixture label, RV documentation, and replacement-light specifications. A household 120V AC ceiling light is not a direct substitute for a 12V DC RV fixture simply because it fits the available space. The input requirements of the new light need to match the circuit supplying it. This distinction also matters when reading product listings. A product may be marketed primarily as a "12V RV light" while its documented input range is broader. For example, the manual currently associated with the Kohree 1500LM 12V LED RV Interior Light specifies DC 12–30V input and 15W power, while the product specification section separately lists the voltage as 12V. Because those descriptions use different voltage wording, verify the current manual and product label for the exact light before installation rather than treating the broader range as a universal compatibility claim. ⚠️ The safest rule Match the replacement to your actual RV circuit rather than assuming compatibility from the words "RV light." 2. Measure the Fixture Footprint, Not Just the Light Opening One of the easiest mistakes to make is buying a new fixture that technically fits—but does not cover what the old fixture leaves behind. Remove or inspect the existing fixture and pay attention to: Overall fixture length and width Available flat mounting surface Existing screw holes Wire opening location Stains or discoloration around the old fixture Any cutout or damaged material the old housing currently hides Clearance around cabinets, vents, trim, or ceiling curves The fixture footprint is often more important than the screw spacing. A replacement that is smaller than the old light may expose screw holes, faded ceiling material, or a larger opening. Those dimensions describe the outside size of the fixture. They do not mean it will automatically cover the mounting area left by your existing light. Measure first. 3. Check Wiring and Connector Compatibility Do not choose an RV LED light based on voltage alone. Before installation, determine: How many conductors are present Which connection is positive and which is negative, when polarity applies Whether the existing wire length is sufficient What connector or termination method is specified Whether the mounting location provides enough room to secure the connections safely Most importantly, do not rely on a universal RV wire-color rule. A light manufacturer may use one color convention while an RV manufacturer uses another. Wiring instructions found for a different RV or light fixture should not be treated as proof of how your particular installation is wired. For the current manual associated with this 1500LM 12V LED RV Interior Light, the fixture wiring is identified as red for positive and white for negative. That instruction applies to that documented product. It should not be generalized to every RV LED light or to the vehicle-side wiring in every RV. If you cannot positively identify the circuit or understand the manufacturer's wiring instructions, stop and have a qualified RV technician or electrician handle the installation. 4. Understand the Switch and Dimmer Setup "Dimmable" does not automatically mean "compatible with my existing wall dimmer." There are several different ways RV interior lights can be controlled: A basic wall switch that supplies or removes power A switch built into the light fixture Touch controls built into the fixture An external dimmer A fixture with its own electronic brightness and color controls These systems are not interchangeable by default. A light with onboard dimming may work with a standard wall switch used only for on/off control, but that does not prove it will operate correctly with every external dimmer. Before replacing the fixture, ask two separate questions: How will the light receive power? How will brightness or color temperature be controlled? The Kohree 1500LM 12V LED RV ceiling light, for example, uses onboard touch controls and features five brightness levels, with adjustment between lower and higher output settings. What's more, this ceiling light also has a memory function that restores the previous lighting mode after power interruption. Because wall-switch and power-cycle behavior can depend on the exact installation, verify the current manual before relying on that feature for a specific RV setup. If you plan to keep an existing wall dimmer rather than a simple on/off switch, confirm compatibility specifically instead of assuming that onboard dimming makes the two systems compatible. 5. Compare Light Output and Power Draw Separately Lumens and watts answer two different questions. Lumens tell you how much light the fixture produces. Watts tell you how much electrical power it uses. Do not use wattage as a shortcut for brightness when comparing LED fixtures. You also do not need the highest lumen number available for every part of an RV. A bright ceiling fixture may be useful over a kitchen or main living area, while that same output can feel uncomfortable late at night if the fixture cannot be dimmed. Think about: Where the fixture will be installed How many lights are used in the space Whether you need general or task lighting How close the light is to seating or sleeping areas Whether you can reduce brightness at night Our 1500LM 12V LED RV Interior Light is manufacturer-listed at 1500 lumens and 15W. Those are product specifications, not a claim that 1500 lumens is the ideal brightness for every RV location. A higher-output fixture becomes much more flexible when you can turn it down. Choose Color Temperature for How You Use the RV Brightness is only part of how an RV interior light feels. Color temperature, measured in Kelvin (K), describes whether the light appears warmer or cooler. Lower Kelvin values generally look warmer and more yellow; higher values look cooler and whiter or more blue-toned. There is no single color temperature that every RVer should use throughout the entire rig. RV Use Light Color to Consider Why Evening relaxation, dinette, lounge, bedroom Warm white (2700–3000K) Can create a softer, more relaxed atmosphere Everyday general lighting Neutral white (3500–4500K) A middle ground between warm ambiance and crisp task lighting Cooking, reading, cleaning, detailed tasks Cooler white or higher brightness (5000–6500K) Can provide a clearer-looking task area These are practical starting points, not industry rules. Personal preference, wall colors, fixture location, diffuser design, and brightness all affect how the light actually looks inside your RV. Adjustable fixtures can reduce the need to choose one permanent setting. This 1500LM LED RV Interior Light currently offers three manufacturer-listed color-temperature ranges: 2900–3100K warm white 4000–4500K neutral white 6000–6500K cool white It also offers five brightness levels. That kind of adjustment can be useful in a multipurpose RV space where the same ceiling light may be used for dinner, reading, cleaning, and late-night lighting. A Safe, High-Level RV Interior Light Replacement Workflow Electrical details vary by RV and fixture, so your vehicle documentation and the new light's instructions take priority over a generic internet procedure. Check your RV manual and the replacement fixture instructions before removing anything. Confirm the circuit, voltage, mounting requirements, wiring instructions, and any limitations. Use this as a planning sequence rather than a substitute for the manuals. 1. Disconnect the Appropriate Power Sources Do not work on the fixture while the circuit is energized. Follow your RV manufacturer's procedure for isolating the relevant electrical system. Depending on the RV, this may involve the battery disconnect, battery connection, shore-power connection, or other steps specified by the manufacturer. The important point is not to copy one disconnect procedure from another RV. Use the instructions that apply to your own vehicle. 2. Document the Existing Installation Before disconnecting the old fixture: Take clear photos Note where each conductor is connected Record the old fixture dimensions Note the screw locations Check the condition of the ceiling or wall behind it A few photos can be extremely useful if something looks different once the fixture is removed. 3. Check the Footprint and Mounting Surface With the old fixture accessible, confirm that the new light covers the required area and has a suitable mounting surface. Do not assume the old screws will line up with the new fixture. 4. Connect and Mount According to the Product Instructions Follow the wiring instructions supplied with the replacement light and the requirements for your RV. Do not choose positive and negative connections based only on a generic internet wire-color chart. If the instructions, vehicle wiring, or required connector method are unclear, this is the point to stop and use a qualified technician. 5. Restore Power and Check Every Control After the fixture is correctly installed and secured, restore power using your RV manufacturer's procedure. Then check: On/off control Each brightness level Color-temperature settings Wall-switch behavior, if used Memory behavior, if the fixture has it 6. Stop if Something Is Not Normal Disconnect power again if you encounter: Unexpected flickering A blown fuse Unusual heat Intermittent operation A control that behaves unpredictably Any sign of a loose or damaged connection ⚠️ Important Do not increase fuse size, bypass protection, or improvise around an unexplained electrical problem. Common Mistakes That Lead to a Poor RV Lighting Upgrade A successful upgrade usually comes down to avoiding a few predictable mistakes. Buying by voltage alone. Two lights can both be described as 12V products while differing substantially in dimensions, mounting, wiring, and control behavior. Ignoring the old fixture's footprint. A smaller replacement can leave visible screw holes, discoloration, or a ceiling opening behind. Choosing the highest lumen number without considering nighttime use. More output is useful only if it works for the location. Dimming can matter just as much as maximum brightness. Confusing watts with lumens. Watts describe electrical power. Lumens describe light output. Confusing color temperature with brightness. A 6000K light may look visually crisper than a warm light, but Kelvin is not a measurement of lumen output. Assuming onboard dimming works with every wall dimmer. Fixture controls and external dimmers need to be evaluated separately. Following universal wire colors. Use the instructions for the actual RV and actual fixture. Trusting installation-time or lifespan marketing claims as guarantees. Installation difficulty depends on the existing fixture, wiring, mounting surface, and condition of the RV. Treat manufacturer lifespan figures as manufacturer claims unless independently verified. When the Kohree 1500LM 12V LED RV Interior Light May Be a Good Fit We built this light for a wired, surface-mounted 12V ceiling setup. If you have roughly 16.7 × 6.6 × 0.6 in of flat mounting space and want onboard touch control with selectable color temperature, it's worth a look. We won't call it a drop-in replacement just because your old fixture runs on 12V—measure your mounting area, confirm the wiring, and check the control setup before you order. We make and sell this light, so the specifications below are our own manufacturer data, not independent test results. Will It Fit Your Rig? Check Detail Best for Travel trailers, fifth wheels, campers, and boats with a flat, smooth interior surface Fixture size Approx. 16.7 × 6.6 × 0.6 in (L × W × H) Power 12V, 15W, wired; we rate operation at 12–30V Wiring 2 wires, no polarity requirement; we include nuts and screws Control Onboard touch; 5 brightness levels; 3 color temperatures Not a direct fit Recessed or curved housings, textured surfaces, or setups that depend on an existing wall switch Consider it when: You're replacing a wired, surface-mount ceiling light. We supply two wires with no polarity requirement and all the mounting hardware, so most DIYers can mount it straight to a flat interior panel—no separate switch or remote needed. You have the mounting footprint to spare. Our fixture runs about 16.7 in long and 6.6 in wide. Measure your opening or ceiling panel before you order. You want one fixture to cover several lighting jobs. We rate it at 1500 lumens and 15W, with 5 brightness levels across warm white (2900–3100K), neutral white (4000–4500K), and cool white (6000–6500K)—enough range for evening reading and daytime task light. You want the control at the light. We put the controls on the fixture itself, which keeps operation simple when your hands are full or the campsite is dark. You want it to remember your settings. We added a documented lighting-mode memory function that recalls your last brightness and color temperature, so you aren't resetting it every time you switch it on. ⚠️ Before you buy We don't treat a 12V fixture as a match for every 12V circuit. Confirm your wire gauge and available amperage, make sure your mounting surface is flat and smooth, and decide whether your existing switch should stay in the loop. If you're unsure about 12V wiring, we'd rather you have a qualified RV technician make the connection. Still deciding between a full fixture, dome lights, and replacement bulbs? I have a Casita Spirit Deluxe 17 and I removed the vent hood like many people do and instead of covering the vent hole or putting in a porthole window like many others I used this light which completely covered the hole and offers much more light now. - NEAL ADAMS Frequently Asked Questions Are RV interior lights always 12 volt? No. Many RV interior lighting systems use 12V DC, but you should not assume every fixture or circuit in every RV is 12V. Check the old fixture label, circuit information, and RV documentation before selecting a replacement. RVs can contain both low-voltage DC systems and 120V AC systems. Can I replace an RV light bulb with a complete LED fixture? Potentially, yes. If the new fixture matches the appropriate electrical system and can be safely mounted and connected according to the RV and fixture instructions, replacing the complete housing can be an option. Check the fixture footprint carefully because a complete fixture replacement changes more than the light source. How many lumens do I need for an RV ceiling light? There is no single lumen number that is right for every RV ceiling location. A small sleeping area, kitchen work surface, and main living area have different needs. Fixture count, mounting location, diffuser design, surface colors, and dimming also change how bright a space feels. Choose the output for the location rather than treating one lumen rating as an RV-wide standard. What color temperature is best inside an RV? It depends on how you use the space. Warm white (about 2700-3000K) can work well for relaxing in the evening, neutral white (about 3500-4500K) provides versatile general lighting, and cooler white (about 5000-6500K) can be useful for detailed tasks. Adjustable-color fixtures give you more flexibility when one RV space serves several purposes. Can a dimmable RV light work with my existing wall switch? A normal on/off wall switch and an external wall dimmer are not the same thing. A fixture with built-in brightness controls may be usable with an on/off switch, but that does not automatically make it compatible with an external dimmer. Check the fixture manufacturer's instructions for your exact control setup. Does wire polarity matter for an RV LED light? It depends on the specific light. Never assume that every RV LED fixture is polarity-sensitive—or polarity-independent. Follow the instructions supplied with the actual fixture. That instruction applies to that product, not to every RV light or every vehicle-side wire. How do I remove an RV interior light cover? That depends on the fixture design. Some covers twist, some clip into place, and others use different retention methods. Do not force a cover based on instructions for an unrelated fixture. Check the light manufacturer's instructions or your RV documentation first. Measure First, Then Upgrade Replacing RV interior lights with 12V LEDs starts before you touch the wiring. Confirm five things first: power compatibility, physical fit, wiring and controls, light output, and color temperature. That prevents most of the problems caused by buying a fixture based only on appearance or a "12V" label. Once those checks are complete, use the exact RV and light-fixture instructions for installation. If the wiring or electrical system is unclear, the safer next step is to have a qualified RV technician or electrician handle the work.
